"Widget the Rolling Dog" (2009)
Widget is a toy dog; it's inspired by the story of Frankie, a real dog who broke his spine after an accident. Widget has a fully functional wheelchair that can easily be attached to her body by a strap. Widget is designed as a package for children and their parents. Is intended to bring a positive example of a dog that had the chance to get back on track. Thanks to the help of her owners she now has a wheelchair, so she can walk and run again. The idea is that children can play with widget, rolling her around on her wooden wheels. At night Widget's wheelchair can be easily detatched, and she's ready to go to sleep with her little owner.
This is a way of involving the kid with the everyday tasks of having a disabled dog. Important also is the fact that "putting to sleep" a dog means love and life in this case and certainly not death.
Widget carries her book around inside a pouch. The book explains her story and underlines the importance of the everyday attentions for a loved disabled dog.
Widget is also part of a wider Branding/Concept called “oLo”. As Widget's little book mentions, oLo is not just a brand and a typographic arrangement, but two eyes and a nose; a positive expression that represents a different way of looking at the world.
In the book Widget talks about oLo’s World and her disabled friends.
When I was half way trough this project, my dog Minu’ suddenly lost her sight.
So this is just for her.
