Blackhorse Lane Ateliers

Here’s a one-off bespoke piece I designed and embroidered for @blackhorselane . I created these patches for their beautiful Type 3 Trucker jacket.

Designing for a music artist, a maker or a brand that don’t have any illustrated visuals associated to their image, often takes me through interesting journeys.

I try and read everything available out there, look for interviews or listen to podcasts. It’s not something all designers do, but my job is not just about designing. It’s about connection, communication, design and then embroidering the old fashioned way.

I like to know my client so that I can really get close to their heart and style. Their ethos and charm. For me it’s about getting the best out of them and not to place them into an uncomfortable and sometimes contrived or artificial place. My visual style changes exactly for this reason. No client is the same and every brief deserves a fresh answer.

This design explores the charm of cutting, repairing and tailoring denim. @blackhorselane attention to sustainability and the type of cottons used in their products. The visual language is charming, old fashioned but still modern and bold. The front patch plays with their existing brand in a fun but not overbearing way. The final piece is something to wear with pride and with a smile on one’s face. Hope you like it as much as I enjoyed working with @blackhorselane , the only denim factory in London!
